Styles Ranging From Formal To Informal and Back Again

Informal and Narrative

In a world where–no, scratch that–in America, there was a boy born who never fully grew up. Was he the smartest? It's absurd to quantify such matters. Was he the funniest? I hope so otherwise what I have done with my life. Was he the most handsome? ABSOLUTELY… not! Could he carry a tune? Let’s not go there! Instead, let’s get down to business. I am writing today to apply for a position at your company. I came across your ad online and instantly knew that I wanted to work for [Insert Company Name] and that I would be a perfect addition to your team… let me explain.

I am writing to express my interest in the Content Writer position at [Insert Company Name], as advertised on the corporate website. “Welcome! The mansion you see before you is the home of, if I may say, a most nefarious blackmailer, a Mister Robert Boddy. Do come in; you are expected.

A bit of history: Robert Body’s great great uncle, Lord Reginald Boddy, was declared Lord Boddy, after somebody discovered an antibody which would save everybody. Notice the mahogany floor; Notice the brass door knobs.

Now that we are met ladies and gentlemen allow me to introduce myself. I am Wadsworth the Butler. My job: I buttle!

You may have noticed that no one is being addressed by their real name. I suggest you refrain from revealing too much about yourself this evening. Lord Boddy’s sleeping quarters. But I’m afraid you cannot go in! It’s all too shocking. You see Mister Boddy no longer sleeps anymore. In fact, you could say he now sleeps forever…

My apologies ladies and gentleman; I’ve been rude. You must understand it is the butler’s job to make everyone feel comfortable, and by the looks on your faces, I adventure to say that you haven’t a clue as to why you are here. But not to worry… we’re all in this together.

Tonight we have six suspects, several murders, and an envelope of incriminating evidence hidden somewhere within this house. The police are on their way. The question is whodunit. Well, I know. I know who did it, and furthermore, I’m going to show you exactly how it was done.

But in order for you to understand what happened that evening., I need to take you through the events of that evening step-by-step. And in order for me to do that. You need to get a clue…”

“CAMP: Good because It’s Awful

The concept of camp can best be seen in fashion, music (especially Lady Gaga), and cinema as an aesthetic style and sensibility that regards an artistic choice and taste as appealing because of its bad taste and ironic value for the amusement of others.

Often the word camp is most widely used to describe a specific phenomenon as "campy" from movies, clothes, furniture, popular songs, art, buildings, etc. Camp aesthetically disrupts the modern ideas of what art is by upsetting common artistic attributes of beauty, value, and taste in order to challenge its audience. Camp engages in the active redefinition of society’s cultural past by presenting the abnormal or even outdated stylistic choices now no longer deemed relevant.

Therefore, “campy” aesthetics distance themselves from the audience as being viewed ironic. Camp embraces the unnatural, exaggeration, and extravagance of itself. While a tragedy involves the hyper-involvement of the situation, Camp proposes a comic and self-aware vision of the world as an experience of under-involvement or detachment from the privileged elite in a world of mass 1 culture. Through embracing the vulgar and extravagant areas of society, stylistic Camp taste chooses to be a mode of enjoyment and appreciation rather than judgment.”

Sample Email Response

Good morning,

I hope this email finds you well. After reviewing both FreshFin's main and UT accounts, I've gained a better understanding of your past activities and the potential for future content creation. From what I've seen, production and creation should be relatively straightforward.

In addition to reviewing FreshFin's accounts, I took the opportunity to research the competition in the SLC area. It's interesting to note the varying degrees of marketing and posting frequency among businesses. Some haven't posted quality content in two years, while others are more consistent, posting roughly once a month. This presents a wonderful opportunity for FreshFin to stand out.

To move forward, I'd like to clarify whether you're looking to create a set number of posts (including reels and photos) on a regular monthly basis, or if you prefer to create a set of reels and photos to be posted periodically. This information will help us estimate the scope of work more accurately.

In terms of pricing, I recommend a flat rate of $200 for photos, with an additional $30 per hour for editing, resulting in 30-40 edited photos per session. For reels, I suggest shooting multiple in a day to lower costs, with a ballpark rate of $45 per hour for shooting and $30 per hour for editing.

For larger-scale projects, such as testimonial or "Who We Are" videos, I propose a separate arrangement. These projects would involve owner and employee interview setups, customer reactions, B-roll footage, and would typically result in longer videos (1+ minute).

Please let me know your thoughts on the proposed pricing structure and if there are any specific requirements or questions you have. I'm eager to collaborate with FreshFin and assist in achieving your marketing goals.

Looking forward to your response.

-A.B. Harrison

“Ideology of Superheroes”

What makes a hero? Is it a cape, extraordinary strength, or an impervious sense of right and wrong that makes the hero? In traditional mass media we have such heroes as Superman who is the poster boy for “Truth, Justice, and the American way” who flies and fights crime with the ultimate understanding of democracy and justice, Batman, the philanthropy playboy who torment by the murder of his parents as a child, dons an all-black cowl and mask to rid the streets of Gotham of menacing criminals, and lastly even Deadpool, the recently popularized Merc with a Mouth, a reluctant anti-hero who delivers chaotic justice for seemingly the sake of selfpreservation, financial gain, and sheer fun. But what makes the hero a hero? According to Marco Arnaudo in The Myth of the Superhero, the three deeply rooted elements in the culture of the United States that institute the archetypal superhero profile include “Optimism, or faith in the practical possibility of improving conditions for oneself and others; Pragmatism, which involves identifying [and following] the necessary steps for obtaining [specific] goals […] and Individualism, understood not as a synonym of “egotism” but as the defense of the [open and] irreducible value of the individual personality,” in service of the collective while still maintaining one’s own beliefs and individual action (64). These qualitative factors invent the superhero as the pinnacle standard for which humans can live in service of the American society. Superheroes as role models of this society act as a service to all citizens by defending the 3 American values of equality, freedom, and justice. They can even be presented as a form of idealistic super police who are morally and ethically superior to those they protect.
